MAZDA RX-8 Description

The "RX-8" is a rotary engine sports car manufactured and sold by Mazda until June 2012. It appeared as the successor to the RX-7, which was discontinued due to inability to meet increasingly strict exhaust gas regulations. A concept model exhibited at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show eventually became the production model. A condition for development was four doors, so the "RX-8," unlike the RX-7, is a 4-door coupe. Making it a sedan-like 4-door would increase body size and weight, potentially losing the nimble handling of a rotary engine car. Therefore, center-opening doors (freestyle doors) were adopted, using lightweight aluminum for the door material. The engine is a rotary engine. It adopted side exhaust ports for the first time in a rotary engine, enabling zero overlap. 6-port and 4-port engines existed. Turbochargers were abolished, and the 4-port was discontinued in a minor change. Due to weight reduction, no grade is equipped with a spare tire. Previously, engine blowouts occurred due to carbon buildup inside the engine, leading to improvements in the engine control unit. Improvements were also made to the coolant reservoir tank and additional heat shielding was added to the driver's footwell. A minor change was implemented in 2008. At this time, the shapes of the front and rear bumpers were changed, and the headlights were also altered. The speedometer adopted a variable red zone system, displaying the engine's rotation range in three stages. Depending on the grade, 17-inch or 18-inch wheels were adopted. Additionally, the Type RS grade was newly added, featuring exclusive 19-inch tires, Recaro seats, and a dedicated engine cover. There was also the Spirit R special limited edition, with only 2000 units produced, based on the Type RS with special exterior and interior equipment. Although not commercially sold, a hydrogen rotary engine equipped vehicle was also set. Since it could only travel 150km on a single hydrogen fill, a system allowing switching between gasoline and hydrogen was adopted. It was introduced only in limited areas like Hiroshima City. Towards the end of its sales, the "RX-8"'s sales figures drastically decreased. Sales declined due to poor fuel efficiency, and it was discontinued in 2012 as it could no longer meet exhaust gas regulations. The information in this description is current as of August 2021.
